Desiderius Pongrcz was a nobleman and refugee from the Hungarian uprising. His was the gift of the "third" eye - a genius for seeing the new in the familiar, finding the unexpected in the traditional.

Witty and brilliant, whether it be in Hungarian, German, French, Russian, English or Afrikaans. His theories were fresh, provocative - not only on vines and wine, but also music, history and winemaking. He was stirred by the symphonies of Beethoven and impressed by the loyal intelligence of his dachshunds.

His wisdom on wine and cultivars revitalised viticulture at the Cape. We pay homage to this scholar and wine lover with this noble sparkle. Pongrcz - composed entirely of two noble varieties dictated by the classic French method.
