Aged for 18 months in French oak, the wine reveals aromas of black cherry, plum, and cassis, unfolding into layers of mocha, spice, and fine-grained tannins. Elegant yet powerful, it showcases De Grendel’s dedication to crafting Merlot of depth and distinction.

De Grendel Viognier

Our Viognier is a great food wine that will pair well with rich pasta, chicken and pork dishes. It’s made from grapes grown on a vineyard is situated on the mid-section of our farm, on a North Western Slope where the soil is dominated by gravel. Viognier is quite unique with berries that shrivel towards full ripeness. Sampling and tasting the fruit during ripening is of utmost importance to end up with a balance between fruit, alcohol and structure. The result is a wine with rich, intense aromas and tastes of white flowers, ripe fleshy peaches, apricots and desiccated pineapple followed through on the palate with an undertow of soft, buttery oak barrel flavours. Crisp, fresh and ready to drink now, but would become slightly richer and creamier with up to 3 years of bottle maturation.

De Grendel Pinot Noir

Bright cherry red in colour, perfumed dried rose petals on the nose supersede luscious red cherry, raspberry and mulberry aromas underscored by nuances of clove and earthy fynbos. An entry of tart cranberry and black plum on the palate is emboldened by fruity pomegranate tannins before finishing with soft, velvety elegance.

The acidity driven elegance and mild tannins of Pinot Noir make for what some would describe as the ultimate food loving wine. Elegant berry flavours compliment game bird, chicken or veal, while gentle tannins and succulent acidity cut through richer venison, lamb and even spicier curried dishes.

Sugar : 2.5 g/l
pH : 3.30

De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc

Toasty nose with hints of dried fruit. Herbaceous on the palate with peas and asparagus. A well-hidden acidity, with a full mid-palate. Round, rich and savoury with a lingering finish.

The De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc was so named because the grapes used to make this wine are grown in the vineyard that sprawls out right next to the old coach house (‘koetshuis’ in Afrikaans) where the wagons of days gone by were once kept.

This wine calls for food with a weightier palate such as Chicken Saltimbocca, pork schnitzel with a cream sauce or simple gnocchi with burnt sage butter.

Serve at 7-9 Deg.

Enjoy now through to 2027.

De Grendel Shiraz

An elegant but powerful Shiraz, sourced from vineyard sites in Firgrove and Paarl and shaped by the De Grendel cellar’s characteristic finesse and clean perfume. Violets and pepper weave through wild black berries and spice with subtle oak support from elevage in a combination of French and American oak, partially new.

Serve 12-15 Deg.

We suggest that you decant this wine or, patience allowed, rest it for a few more years in the cellar.

Very versatile – from steaks, roasts and lamb shank to Springbok and sausage. Loves tomato-based sauces.
