The story: It’s named after Cape Town’s 500-year-old Treaty Tree, an ancient White Milkwood in Woodstock, is a living monument that has witnessed the most pivotal and tragic moments in South African history, serving as a silent backdrop to indigenous resistance, the horrors of the slave trade, and the shifting hands of colonial power. The ancient tree, officially a protected species, has witnessed a series of profound historical chapters.
The Battle of Salt River (1510): The earliest lore surrounding the tree connects it to a famous battle on the original Woodstock beachfront. Portuguese explorer Dom Francisco de Almeida and 64 of his men were slaughtered here by the indigenous Khoikhoi after the Portuguese attempted to raid cattle and abduct children from a local kraal.
The “Old Slave Tree”: During the Dutch colonial era, the tree became a site of human suffering. It was used as a marketplace where enslaved people were bought and sold, and its boughs were reportedly used to hang disobedient slaves and convicts.
The Handover of the Cape (1806): Following the British victory at the Battle of Blaauwberg, the Dutch forces were defeated. The Articles of Capitulation were signed on 10 January 1806 at a nearby cottage known as Treaty House, officially ceding the Cape to British rule. It was from this event that the milkwood earned its name, “The Treaty Tree”.
Preservation: The original cottage was demolished in the 1930s to make way for a factory, but the tree survived and was declared a national monument in the late 1960s. Today, it stands as a fenced-off historical site at the corner of Treaty Road and Spring Street.
